As per the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), the Aadhar services in UPI and IMPS payment modes came to a termination. As per NPCI, it cited the privacy issues linked to the sensitive data in Aadhar.
Earlier the NPCI launched a service called “Pay to Aadhar” through which anyone can send money to Aadhar number connected bank account through IMPS UPI gateways. However, there are some apprehensions regarding the use of personal information. These are registered in Aadhar for money transfers at a large scale and the possible data breaches. Considering those factors, The NPCI issued a circular on July 17th 2018. As per it, the banks get urged to discontinue the Aadhar linkage to bank accounts.
Thus, in September 2018, The Supreme Court of India ruled that section 57 of the Aadhar Act is unconstitutional.
According to the judgment, linking Aadhar is still valid. Yet, forcing people to link Aadhar to bank accounts, digital wallets, or mobile phone numbers is illegal.
Afterwards, banks and wallet service providers and other financial institutions started using alternatives of Aadhar, such as e-KYC. Since then, many people who initially linked Aadhar with various accounts and services began to delink them.

Some even made it mandatory to use Aadhar as id proof.
The use of Aadhar by private entities raised questions regarding an individual’s right to privacy. Added to that, sensitive data theft and misuse of one’s information also held good.
