However, it is not compulsory to link Aadhar with your bank accounts, mutual funds, etc. Aadhar is necessary to avail of government subsidies like LPG, kerosene, scholarships, etc.
So, what is a PAN card? A PAN card or Permanent Account Number is a 10-digit combination of alphabets and numerals that is unique for every applicant.
The IT department allows it under the authority of the Central Board of Direct Taxes or CBDT. It is a mandatory thumb rule requisite for every financial transaction. Be it receiving a salary, or submitting school fees; it is a mandatory requirement.
The PAN card’s primary objective is to keep track of financial transactions to avoid any tax exemption. Anyone who earns a taxable monthly income in India and NRIs is mandatory to apply for a PAN card.
Now you must be thinking, why at all do we need an Aadhar card? Well, the Aadhar card is innumerably used as a biometric recognition card.
It was proposed by the government of India to acquire biometric information of citizens residing in the country.
UIDAI proposed it as a 12-digit unique identification number to all residents of India. It is assigned with all the biometric and demographic knowledge of the person.
There have been many instances where people are found with one or more PAN cards. Even though it is illegal, people don’t back off in issuing an application for its return.
There are severe punishments framed for such as well. Under the Section 272B Act of Income Tax department, a person found with more than one PAN card is penalized with Rs. 10,000.
So, to fill those loopholes, it was proposed by the Government of India to link Aadhar with a PAN card. A person may have one or more PAN cards.
However since the Aadhar card is linked with the biometric details, it doesn’t vary with one person. Thus, it can be mended.

As per Govt. of India rules, CBDT has proposed a manual method to make it easier. There are people mismatching or getting confused with the PAN card or Aadhar numbers. Making things manual would ease up their burden.
Under manual form fill-up, you have to visit any nearby service centers of NSDL or UTIITSL and complete the information criteria (Annexure-1). As documentation, you need to carry a copy of Aadhar card and PAN card with you.
After submitting the copies of PAN card and Aadhar, pay the prescribed fee. Unlike online services, it is not free of cost. The prescribed fee depends on the correction to be made (if any) in Aadhar card or PAN card.

In case of any major mismatch, Biometric authentication is compulsory. For instance, they can ask for a fingerprint verification or signature.
For example, if your name on Aadhar card is RAHUL SHARMA and that PAN card is RAHOOL SHARMA. Your Aadhar name is correct, while your PAN cardholder name has to be changed. Thus they will charge Rs. 110.

As well as purchasing jewelry, opening a new bank account, buying property, etc. Under the jurisdiction of UIDAI, to issue a unique identity biometric card that is relevant and secure, Aadhar was introduced. For additional security you should also lock your biometrics.
Now under the Government of India rules, it is mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhar :
- Ever marked, you are honestly paying taxes, whereas some are getting away not being noticed? Well, this is gonna cease at once. The government will ease you with lower tax rates.
- The tax filing process will be smoother as the Aadhar card itself will do the re-verification. So your time consumption will be saved.
- From a regulatory standpoint, you will not be able to file returns from the next year. Whereas login into your IT transactions, you can clearly get the information.
- It also helps a lot in uncovering huge black money from our country. People own more Aadhar card than PAN card. So due to lack of audit trail, people evading from the tax exemptions will be bought under the tax net, and the base gets expanded.
- From the government point of view, one will find difficulty maintaining more than one Aadhar card since it is linked with biometric identities. But there are cases of multiple PAN cards even though illegal. Thus linking both can narrow another loophole to this country.
