I ran from what I love for so long that when I got tired it caught
with me and I am Glad. I write, produce and direct inspirational stage
plays. I stated as a prop man for a famous playwright Mr. Shelly Garrett
when I was about 20 and for the last twenty years, telling stories is
all I have been doing in one form or another. I know what your saying "I
thought you said you ran from it?" I mean I ran from the position of
the calling. I acted in Mr. Garrett's productions for 4 years before
finally getting up enough nerve to approach the promoters and ask for a
shot to do my own production and to my amazement they said yes. I didn't
know anything about directing (which is my calling) and even less about
promotions producing or anything other than the stage. (that, I had
down to a science- from sound to lighting to set and props) But none of
those thing prepared me for the criminals and thieves that some
promoters are I went from living in a 5,000 square foot home and
hundreds of thoudands of dollar to penny less homes and owing more than 1
million dollars to people I never met. so I said i would start doing my
own productions. I thought "heck. I can lie to myself better than a
promoter could lie to me, they keep telling me "I have the money all the
while begging from friends and lying to banks and theaters. I finally
had my fill and launched Indygo Media we are a national theatrical
production company. Well maybe that's a little much how about we have
done 7 different stage plays over the past twelve years and we have move
to Houston Our birth place to launch another production. It.s been 26
years since I have been here so I don't have the financial connection
need for such an undertaking building cost set building rehearsal and so
on. I know you are saying start small. but I have seen the promise land
And small won't get the desired results.
The Impact
The
impact at one time I would have said was my wallet but now that so
incorrect. Where do you feel the impact? I have watched young black
children who have never been out of the neighborhood stare the theater
in amazement. Wow! one child said "Mommma It's like we outside and we
are inside." (looking up at the fresco on the ceiling . After that I
realized I can make an impact on lives!!! It's not about money, it's
about memories. African children and adults have not been exposed to
real theater, the sounds, the sites, being that close to the performers.
It is the biggest hi in life watching t5he eye of a parent looking at
her children sitting there watching a stage production. You must realize
African Americans have segregated themselves from being a family even
in in place that are geared for families like Church. Theaters gives
them a cultural awaking that no other thing I know can do for the price.
How it affect the actors in the production will astound you. I know i
had an actor who was know well in the community as a drug dealers who
gave his life to God . Hid nickname is C-Nile but in the production his
name is "LOC" he told me that for the last 3 months his own child calls
in LOC. A life that will never be the same . That what a live stage
production does for you.
